A comment on Risks of Cell Phone Use While Driving

Amy, I suspect that the difference between hands free and conversation with a passenger is that the passenger has an interest in the safety of the travel and has an awareness of what's going on around the car, while the person at the other end of a hands free phone call doesn't. When traffic gets complicated, most passengers know to shut up and let the driver tend to business.

A comment on Risks of Cell Phone Use While Driving

I find it interesting that they included hands free cell phone use in the statistic for distraction while driving. I would think the hands free would be about as much distraction as having a conversation with someone in the vehicle. Perhaps it is because of dialing and disconnecting?

A comment on Doctor Faces Manslaughter Charges in Death of Abortion Patient

I think the line between civil and criminal lies in the difference between merely screwing up (miscalculating the dose of anesthesia, botching the resuscitation by not placing the endotracheal tube properly, etc.) and showing reckless disregard for patient well-being (not having a qualified person with appropriate equipment monitoring an anesthetized patient, proceeding with surgery instead of resuscitating a patient who has stopped breathing, ect.)

A comment on Parents Sue Bully. School District Next?

My son is being bullied in our school district. I jhave spoken and met with school administrators and the local police. My son is 10 years old and suffers from cerebral palsy. He can walk but not without much effort.
Some of the children have found this amusing and have bullied him for 3 years now. I have been told by one officer that my son should keep his mouth shut.I need legal help, but I don't have the money to pay up front. If you have any suggestions please help. I live in the south suburbs of Illinois. I am sorry about what hapened to Billy.

A comment on So what is an MDL?

This is very helpful. "MDL" is one of those terms that people throw around (like "habeus corpus") that I've had to have people sit down and explain. This was, as Tom says, very thorough.

A comment on Indifference at Denver County Jail

Thank you.. I am Emily's Mother, and, my heart will never be the same.. Emily was not a challange, not that that should make a difference, everyone shoud be treated as a human being. Emily worked nights at Herman's, she got home at about 3am every night, for her to have a 7am breath alcohol of .121, would not be unusual at 7am. That was her 5pm to all of us. She made a bad choice, she should not have driven, but if they would have let her live, she would have paid for that. Emily begged, she was reduced to the lowest life form , begging for someone to help her, they did not. I live with that every day. I am a nurse, I know how incredibly painful she died, and I do not want to know how many times she must have called my name. I cannot have her back, I only sleep with the clothes she wore the night she died so I can still smell her.. you cannot imagine. I can only try and help the next person that is put in Emily's position.. to beg that another might not die..

With all my Heart,
Sue Garber
