Seat belt law toughens in Eagle County

Deadly Colorado motor vehicle accidents have prompted lawmakers in Eagle County to make their seat belt laws the toughest in the state, an article from the Denver Post said yesterday. Now law enforcement officers can pull over and fine drivers simply because they aren't wearing seatbelts.

The Eagle County commissioners voted unanimously on Wednesday to put a law into effect imposing a $25 fine on drivers or passengers who fail to wear seatbelts on county roads.

The move follows a series of serious wrecks in which seat belts weren't used, including a May rollover in which one Battle Mountain High School student was killed and eight others were injured.

Eagle County is believed to be the first government in the state to make not wearing a seat belt a "primary offense," meaning that officers can pull over drivers solely for that infraction.
