All State and State Farm in Lott's Crosshairs

Yet another staunch supporter of insurance companies is turning over a new leaf. Sen. Trent Lott (Rep.) from Mississippi a long time supporter of big business is now redirecting his attention and focus back on the same industry he has supported for over 35 years. Why?

Because Sen. Lott now knows what it feels like to be mistreated the insurance companies. His own home in Mississippi was completely destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. He recently settled with his insurer State Farm after a year long battle with the company regarding insurance coverage over his home. "'I'm like a woman scorned. I'm prepared to continue to kick their fanny until the last day I'm alive on this Earth because they gave mistreated too many people,'" Lott says. (To read the full article, click here.)

Interestingly enough, since Sen. Lott was elected to the Senate in 1988, the insurance industry has contributed the most to his campaigns. However, things have changed drastically after Lott became one of the tens of thousands of Gulf Coast homeowners whose claims were rejected when State Farm decided the damage to his home was caused by flooding and not wind. (Wind driven water is covered under most insurance policies, however, flooding is not). Now, Lott is devoting his time and energies to make certain that insurance companies change their ways by writing their policies in plain English so regular folks know what is covered and what is not as well as removing the insurance companies long-standing exemption from federal anti-trust laws.
