A recent news posting on 9news.com highlights the care homeowners must exercise when choosing a contractor. A couple in Denver found out the hard way when they hired a landscaper to redo their backyard. Come to find out the landscaper was not registered with the Associated Landscape Contractors of Colorado (ALCC) which represents 718 members in the state.

The group offers these tips to ensure that you pick the right contractor:

1. Do your research before hiring a contractor. Are they a member of ALCC?
2. Get your estimates in writing.
3. Talk to past and present customers and ask:
a. Did the contractor display good work habits, return calls promptly and keep appointments?
b. Did the contractor honor the contract and respond to concerns expressed by the customer?
c. Would the customer hire the firm again?
