Two Companies to pay $407 million for Mistakes in Big Dig Project

On Wednesday, January 23rd, two companies that managed and designed the Big Dig project in Boston, MA, will have to pay $407 million to the state and federal governments due to leaky tunnels and a fatal ceiling collapse which killed a woman who was driving through a tunnel to Logan International Airport.

The two companies, Bechtel Infrastructure Corporation and Parsons Brinckerhoff acknowledged their oversight failures and will pay the $407 million while numerous other small companies will pay an additional $51 million.

The Big Dig is the one of the most expensive highway projects, totaling around $15 billion.

Most of the money received will be used to pay for "non-routine" repairs on the Big Dig. The two companies will still be held accountable if any catastrophic events happen that cause over $50 million in damages.
